Departments
The grounds are organised into departments.
Each is responsible for a particular field of investigation, although boundaries are deliberately porous. Plants, objects, weather, signals and other phenomena have been known to move between departments without notice.

Departments may contain laboratories, plots, collections, workshops or things for which a satisfactory name has not yet been found.
Experiments
Experiments begin with something worth trying.
Some are botanical. Some technological. Some concern the relationship between the two. An experiment may last an afternoon, a season or considerably longer than originally intended.
Results are recorded where possible. Failure is considered a result.
Field Notes
Not everything requires an experiment.
Field Notes record observations made around the grounds – growth, decay, weather, unexpected visitors, things heard, things found and changes that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
A note may become an experiment.
Or it may simply remain a note.

Grove Green is an experimental botanical institution at the edge of the garden.
It exists to grow things, make things and find out what happens.
Its work moves between horticulture, technology, observation and unnecessary invention. Some activities are carefully planned. Others begin because an apple, an old telephone or a piece of wood happens to suggest something.
